About product

M4A1 Sherman Direct Vision Type in 1:35 scale from Asuka (Tasca)

This injection-molded plastic kit captures the earliest form of the American medium tank M4A1 Sherman in 1:35 scale. Its distinguishing feature is the cast hull with the so-called direct vision ports for the driver and the co-driver - fixed slots in the front of the hull instead of the later periscopes. The set includes a new cast hull of this type, an early gun barrel, finely detailed early running gear, flexible belt tracks (T41 with smooth rubber blocks), photo-etched parts, clear parts for the vision ports and the lights, a commander figure and decals for several options. Asuka (formerly Tasca) is a Japanese maker regarded as the leader in Sherman kits. The model is intended to be assembled and painted.

The real subject

The M4 Sherman was the most widespread American medium tank of the Second World War and served with Allied armies as well. The M4A1 version was marked by a fully cast hull of rounded shapes. The earliest examples had direct vision ports for the driver in the front of the hull - simple slots with armored covers - which were soon replaced in production by periscopes for better protection. This variant therefore represents the very beginning of Sherman production, with an early configuration of the running gear and the armament.

Building and painting tips

Glue the parts with a liquid cement for plastic and the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate glue. Finish and paint the early running gear and the lower hull before you close the hull up. Treat the surface with a primer and apply olive drab with an airbrush. The cast hull takes a highlighting of the casting texture well; washes bring out the details and pigments create mud and dust effects on the running gear. Mask the clear parts of the vision ports and the lights before spraying.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of American and Allied Shermans
  • Modelers interested in early production variants
  • Builders who appreciate high accuracy and fine detail
  • More experienced modelers working with photo-etched parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
