The model captures present-day equipment, which is a welcome change from the predominance of Second World War subjects, and in 1:35 scale it offers plenty of room for detail. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The ZTZ-99A is the most capable version of the Chinese Type 99 main battle tank family, in service with the ground forces of the People's Liberation Army. It follows a design school built on a low silhouette, a 125 mm gun with an autoloader and a three-man crew; the autoloader made it possible to do without a loader and to reduce the volume of the fighting compartment. The identifying feature of the A version is the wedge-shaped front of the turret with additional protection and the extensive modules of reactive armor on the hull and the turret. The tank is one of the types that appear regularly at large military parades, so it is well known among modelers too.
A modern tank stands or falls on the cleanliness of the surface: sand the joints on the turret and the hull carefully, because large flat areas reveal every unevenness. Finish the running gear and the hull sides before you fit the side skirts. Apply a primer and spray the contemporary camouflage with an airbrush; on modern vehicles the transitions between the fields are usually harder than on wartime vehicles, so masking pays off. Paint details such as the optics, the machine guns and the lights with a brush at the end. Keep the weathering restrained, because vehicles in active service are usually maintained, so a fine dust on the lower hull, wear on the walking surfaces and a discreet wash in the joints are enough.
