The real subject

The tanks of the KV series were Soviet heavy machines of the Second World War. You can tell them from the medium types by their massive hull and thick armor, which gave them a toughness paid for in weight and reduced mobility. It is the armor that the viewer watches most on a model: every opening, rivet and cover stands out at once on a large surface, and for that reason the small details of the armor are dealt with by replacement parts.

What the set contains

Turned parts in 1:35 scale, armor plugs, that is covers for the openings in the armor. Turning gives these parts a regular circular shape and a clean edge, which are hard to achieve on a small plastic part. The replacement therefore shows on the finished model too, where a crisp circle stands next to softer plastic relief. Which piece belongs to which opening on which version is given in the instructions enclosed in the package.

Building and painting tips

• Cut off the original plastic detail with a sharp blade a little away from the surface and sand the area flat.
• Try the opening for the new part dry; it usually helps to true it with a drill.
• The parts are not polystyrene and cement for plastic has no effect on them; use super glue.
• Dose the glue sparingly, as the excess wicks into the surroundings and floods the fine edges.
• Wash and degrease the parts before painting, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface.
• Apply the paint thinly, so that the fine edges are not flooded.
