A plastic kit of the German Type VII-B submarine in 1:350 scale from Hobby Boss. A model of the best-known category of German submarines of the Second World War.
Responsibility details are not available.
The kit captures the German Type VIIB submarine, that is one of the variants of the most numerous submarine family of the Second World War. With submarines 1:350 is the most widespread scale, so the model fits well into a collection alongside other vessels of the same era. The kit is among the more accessible Hobby Boss models and is a fitting step into submarine building for anyone who has so far built mainly vehicles or aircraft.
Type VII submarines were the workhorse of the German submarine war in the Atlantic. Compared with the basic version, the VIIB variant received a larger fuel capacity and therefore a markedly greater range, thanks to which it could operate further from its bases. These were diesel-electric vessels, which moved under water on electric motors and batteries and spent most of their time on the surface. It was on Type VIIB boats that many of the best-known crews of the first war years served.
The key part of the build is the lengthwise seam of the hull, which has to be filled, sanded and checked with a coat of primer. The wooden deck and the walkways of the conning tower deserve different treatment from the steel hull, whether by a fine difference of shade or with a dry brush. Apply the main shades with an airbrush over an even base. On submarines it suits to suggest rust streaks below the drain openings and a deposit at the waterline, but in moderation, because exaggerated weathering looks unnatural on a small model.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
