About product

Masks for a closed canopy and the wheels

The Aichi D3A, known to the Allies by the code name Val, was a Japanese carrier dive bomber with fixed landing gear in aerodynamic fairings and with long glazing divided by many frames. The D3A2 version received a more powerful engine and a larger fuel capacity. It is exactly that glazing which makes building the aircraft a lengthy job, because every frame has to be painted separately and freehand it never comes out clean.

What the set solves

The package holds pre-cut self-adhesive masks that are stuck onto the transparent parts and give the paint a precise boundary. This version is prepared for a canopy assembled in the closed position, that is for the variant where only the outer surfaces of the frames are masked. Besides the cockpit the set also covers the wheels, where the mask separates the rim from the rubber and saves the laborious work of drawing round a circle with a brush.

Procedure

The parts are peeled off the backing with tweezers, laid on the glazing and pressed down with the edge of a toothpick so that no paint runs under the edge. Spray thinned paint in thin coats. Take the masks off shortly after drying, while the coat is still flexible, because once it has cured fully the edge can lift the paintwork with it.

A saving in time that can be counted

The long cockpit of this bomber has several dozen separate frames, and drawing round a single one of them by hand takes even an experienced builder long minutes, with the risk of the brush slipping lasting the whole time. A pre-cut shape removes that uncertainty and, above all, guarantees that the width of the frame will be the same along the whole length of the glazing. Uneven width is a mistake that a viewer spots even without knowing the subject.

Who it is for

It suits anyone building this aircraft who has chosen a closed cockpit. Anyone who wants to show the canopy slid back will reach for the open-position variant instead. The kit and the paints are not included.
