About product

Soviet AS-2 airfield starter vehicle 1:48 (UM)

This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from UM (Unimodel) represents the Soviet AS-2 airfield starter vehicle, built on the chassis of the three-axle GAZ-AAA truck. The set combines injection-molded plastic with photo-etched parts for the finer details, which makes it a kit for more experienced modelers.

The real subject

The AS-2 starter vehicle was used at field airfields to start aircraft engines by turning the propeller, which made it easier to get machines running in cold weather and without fixed ground facilities. The vehicle was based on the widely used GAZ-AAA truck, the Soviet licensed version of a Ford design that formed the backbone of Soviet motor transport in the Second World War.

Building and painting tips

Cut the photo-etched parts free and glue them with super glue (cyanoacrylate); join the plastic parts with liquid cement for plastic. We recommend assembling and painting the chassis and the engine before closing up the bodywork, using a primer and an airbrush, and finishing the weathering with washes and pigments for the dusty look of a field airfield.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Soviet aviation ground equipment in 1:48
  • Builders of airfield dioramas and scenes
  • Experienced modelers with photo-etched parts behind them
  • Anyone interested in unusual support vehicles of the Second World War

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
