A set of die-cut masks for spraying the distinctive Swedish camouflage pattern on the single-seat versions of the Saab 37 Viggen in 1:48 scale. It is neither a kit nor a set of decals: it is an aid that marks out the individual fields of the pattern on the model, so that a sharp edge can be sprayed without the labor of cutting your own templates.
The Saab 37 Viggen was a Swedish multirole combat aircraft with an unusual layout: ahead of the main delta wing it carried a smaller canard surface with a flap of its own. Thanks to that and to its thrust reverser it could take off and land on short closed-off stretches of road, which the Swedish doctrine of dispersed bases counted on. The single-seat versions covered strikes against ground and naval targets, reconnaissance and fighter duties; they differed mainly in their equipment, not in the structure of the airframe. The most striking visual feature of the Swedish aircraft is the multicolor splinter camouflage of irregular fields with sharp edges, a pattern that is very hard to reproduce freehand, which is exactly why modelers reach for masks.
Work on a perfectly clean, degreased and dry surface. Spray the lightest shade first, let it cure and only then lay down the masks for the next fields and work toward the darker colors. Smooth the edges of the mask down with a blunt tool so that paint does not creep underneath, and spray perpendicular to the surface in thin coats. Lift the masks shortly after the paint has set, not once it has cured completely, as the edge then stays clean and the paint does not tear at the border. Keep the offcuts of the sheet, as they serve very well for masking small details on later builds.
