A large injection-molded plastic kit of the carrier aircraft in 1:48 scale from Trumpeter. The subject is the EKA-3B version derived from the heavy carrier bomber A-3 Skywarrior, adapted for aerial refueling and electronic warfare. The box contains gray plastic parts with finely engraved panel lines, a clear canopy, a photo-etched fret, a well detailed cockpit and landing gear bays. Because of its size and the number of parts it is a kit better suited to more experienced modelers.
The Douglas A-3 Skywarrior was one of the largest and heaviest aircraft ever to operate from the decks of US Navy aircraft carriers. It was powered by two jet engines in nacelles under the wing and originally served as a strategic carrier of a bomb load. A range of specialized versions gradually appeared; the EKA-3B combined the role of an aerial tanker with equipment for jamming enemy radars and for the electronic support of strike formations. Thanks to its long service the machine became an important element of carrier air wings during the Cold War.
Follow the instructions and first finish the cockpit and the landing gear bays, and only then close the fuselage. On the large surfaces make sure the glue joints are firm and straight so that no gaps appear. Use liquid cement for plastic, a primer and an airbrush; glue the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate. Mask the clear canopy before painting. The large wing and fuselage areas come out well with fine washes in the engraved lines and discreet service weathering.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
