Furball Aero-Design prints the cockpit detail onto ordinary water-slide decal paper. According to the manufacturer the package holds elements of the instrument panels and side consoles, detail of the pedals and the markings of the harness straps and pull handles for the ejection seats. One part of the sheet covers the cockpits of the F-4B and F-4N versions, the other the F-4J and F-4S.
The instrument panel of a Phantom is densely occupied and hand-painting the individual dials in 1:48 scale calls for a steady hand and a magnifier. A decal gives the same values in a fraction of the time, the dials stay legible and the gloss of the glass comes from a drop of clear varnish. Compared with photo-etch it also keeps the three-dimensional relief of the original part, because it follows its shape and does not cover it with a flat plate. Nothing stands in the way of combining both approaches either: use only some of the elements and paint the rest of the panel in, as the sheet can be divided without trouble.
Spray the surfaces under the decal matte black or gray and coat them with gloss varnish. Lay the element on the moistened base, slide it into place and press it home with a cloth. On broken-up consoles a decal softener helps, and matte varnish comes at the end. Cut the straps only after transferring them, so that they keep their shape.
