1:48 Lockheed P-38H Lightning — Eduard mask set

The item belongs to Eduard's mask line. Its job is simple and precisely defined: to cover the glazed surfaces of a model temporarily so that the frames and the surrounding surface can be sprayed, and to disappear again once the paint is dry. That is what sets a mask apart from the other accessory lines of the same maker. A full photo-etched set adds metal parts to the model, the pre-painted Zoom adds finished color panels, the resin Brassin line adds solid castings and decals add a printed motif, whereas a mask is a working aid.

What makes masking the Lightning particular

The Lightning has a pair of tail booms and a short nacelle with a small cockpit between them. The glazed area is therefore fairly small, but densely divided and surrounded by flat surfaces along which the paint easily carries on. The individual templates are consequently tiny, and pointed tweezers and good light help when seating them. Mask the rest of the model, mainly the boom noses and the front of the nacelle, separately with ordinary tape.

Usage tips

The commonest mistake is paint creeping under the edge. You can prevent it in three steps: degrease the surface, press the edge of the mask down firmly with a blunt tool, and before the top shade overspray the edges with a thin coat of the base color, which seals the gap. Apply the paint from a greater distance and in several light passes, as a heavy wet coat is drawn under the edge by capillary action. Take the mask off slowly, pulling sideways at an angle, and wipe any adhesive residue away with isopropyl alcohol.
