Decals for the British Tornado in 1:48 scale. They cover the GR.1 strike aircraft as well as the F.2 and F.3 fighters of several squadrons.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Panavia Tornado came about as a joint project of Great Britain, Germany and Italy and for three decades it was the backbone of European combat aviation. The British used it in two entirely different roles. The GR.1 version was a strike machine built for a low-level dash and for carrying armament against ground targets. The F.2 fighter version and the more capable F.3 that followed it, by contrast, guarded the northern approaches to the islands and had a longer fuselage and different equipment.
The decals cover both branches of the family in forty-eighth scale. Among the machines offered are aircraft of No. 9, No. 15, No. 20, No. 27 and the famous No. 617 Squadron, along with a test airframe of a trials establishment and machines of air defense units in fighter configuration. Besides the national markings, the sheet carries squadron badges, code letters and the serial numbers of individual machines, so a particular aircraft can be built, not merely a general scheme.
A smooth gloss surface gives the best results. The decal is released from its backing in lukewarm water, set onto a coat of gloss varnish and settled with a decal softener so that it follows the rivets and the panel lines. Once dry it is sprayed over with matte or semi-gloss varnish according to the particular scheme. The aircraft itself has to be obtained separately; the package holds only the printed sheets and the drawings of the schemes. Before building it pays to choose a particular machine and to match the shade of the camouflage to it. British Tornados wore several entirely different schemes during their service, from a dark green finish for low flying to the light gray of the fighter machines.
