This item is a detail accessory in resin, not a model of an aircraft. It replaces the main landing gear wheels on an I-16 model in 1:48 scale. On this aircraft it is more than cosmetic: the I-16 had a short, stubby fuselage and fairly hefty wheels, which retracted backwards under the wing. Looking at a finished model from below or from the front, the wheels make up a considerable part of the silhouette and the way they are made therefore catches the eye sooner than many other things. A resin casting solves the two usual weaknesses of plastic wheels - the parting line across the tread and a flat, bland hub.
The Polikarpov I-16 was a Soviet single-seat fighter of the first half of the 1930s, one of the first series-built low-wing monoplanes with retractable landing gear. The structure combined a wooden fuselage shell with a metal truss framework and fabric covering of the control surfaces. Many production series were built, which differed in engine, armament and cockpit layout; the small differences extended to the landing gear too, so it pays to compare the castings with the documentation for the series you are building.
First wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water so that the primer holds. Cut the casting block off with a saw and level the mating surface by sanding wet. On the I-16 take care that both wheels stand in the same plane - the model has a short track and a wheel glued on crooked shows at once. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Paint the tire dark gray; a saturated black will swallow the tread in 1:48 scale. Set the hub apart in a lighter shade and make the transition with a circular mask or a careful brush. A model of a fighter operated from grass and field strips will take heavier dusting with pigment on the wheels - it is precisely at the landing gear that weathering is most convincing.
The accessory is supplied unpainted. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
