A detail that disappears at first glance but that those in the know spot immediately: the shape of the exhaust stacks of the Merlin. The round outlet belongs to the earlier series and stayed on machines delivered at a time when the later flattened solution had not yet taken hold. Anyone building a particular aircraft from a period photograph has to check the shape, because mixing the two up moves the model into an entirely different production stage. That is exactly why two versions of this set were made side by side: they are not the same part under two names, but two different exhaust terminations.
The package brings together cast parts that are otherwise bought one at a time. The instrument panel comes with a colored surface and with seat belts, the exhausts are fitted in place of the plastic parts from the kit, and the masks make spraying the glazing frames and the tires easier. With a single purchase the modeler covers the parts of the aircraft where molded plastic runs into its limits.
The set assumes an Airfix kit in the scale mentioned; the model itself is not part of the delivery. Anyone preparing several Mk.IXs side by side will appreciate that the two terminations come separately, so no unused castings are left over.
