About product

A4/V-2 Rocket 1:72

An injection-molded plastic kit of the German A4/V-2 ballistic rocket in 1:72 scale. The model of the rocket is supplied unassembled and unpainted, to be glued and painted. The exact contents of the package and the number of parts are given on the sheet enclosed in the box.

The real subject

The A4 rocket, named V-2 for propaganda purposes (Vergeltungswaffe 2, meaning retaliation weapon), was the first ballistic missile in the world to be used in practice. It was developed in Nazi Germany during the Second World War and powered by a liquid-propellant rocket engine. Combat use began in September 1944; more than 3000 were launched, among other targets against London and later against Antwerp and Liege. The range of the rocket was around 320 km and it carried a warhead of roughly one ton. Despite its origin as a weapon, the A4/V-2 became a significant technical milestone and the direct forerunner of postwar space rocketry.

Building and painting tips

Clean the parts of their sprue stubs, glue them with a thin modeling cement for plastic and sand the lengthwise seams of the body carefully — on the slender cylindrical body of a rocket the seams show clearly. Spray the model with a primer before painting. A camouflage scheme with irregular fields is typical of the V-2; an airbrush allows soft transitions between the color fields. The surface rewards weathering: a fine wash brings out the details and a dry brush or pigments suggest wear and traces of handling. Do not forget the contrast between the camouflage fields and any light overspray.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of German military hardware and rocket weapons of the Second World War
  • lovers of the history of rocketry and of its beginnings
  • modelers looking for an unconventional subject for the display case in 1:72 scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
