Masking templates for the spinner spiral on models of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 in the G and K versions, 1:72 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The G version was the most numerous form of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and in crew slang it was called the Gustav. It was powered by the inverted twelve-cylinder Daimler-Benz 605 series and from 1942 it formed the backbone of the day fighter force. The letter K marked the last production form, with an aerodynamically cleaned-up fuselage and revised cowling, which reached the units only in the last months of the war.
The artwork on the propeller spinner is barely a few millimeters across at this size. Painting it by hand with a brush is practically out of the question and the line goes shaky. Cut film holds the shape for you: it is applied over the base, oversprayed with the second shade, and once lifted the spiral stays symmetrical even on so small an area.
It is best to paint the spinner before the propeller blades go on, while the surface is freely accessible. Hold the nozzle at right angles, keep the air pressure rather low and lay the paint on in two or three passes. The templates come on their own in the package; the model and the paints do not belong with them.
The appearance of the spiral differed according to the propeller maker and the unit. Some aircraft had a light line on a dark base, others the reverse arrangement, and on yet others the artwork curved only over the front third of the area. Before you reach for the paint, look at a photograph of the particular aircraft. The set allows either order of shades, because it defines the shape and not the color, and the finished detail tends to be the first thing a visitor asks about.
