An injection-molded plastic kit of the Chinese ZTZ99A main battle tank in 1:72 scale from Meng. This is a new tool released in 2025 as part of a line of small-scale military vehicle models in which the manufacturer has focused on combining fine detail with trouble-free assembly. The completed model is roughly 153 mm long. The box contains link & length tracks (a combination of individual links and straight runs), which greatly simplify building the running gear, along with waterslide decals. The design allows the hatches to be built open or closed, and the barrel can be fitted in either the raised or the level position.
The ZTZ99A is the pinnacle of China's third-generation main battle tanks and the most modern Chinese MBT in series production. It is based on the ZTZ99 but reworks it substantially: it received a new welded turret with pronounced frontal protection, composite armor supplemented with reactive modules and active protection features, a modern fire-control system, and a more powerful powerplant. The main armament is a 125 mm gun with an autoloader, which lets the crew number just three. A distinctive feature of the vehicle is the wedge-shaped front of the turret and the pronounced blocks of add-on armor.
Start with the running gear: fit the wheels so they sit in a single plane, or the tracks will not seat properly. Glue the link & length tracks onto the wheels in sections – softened with cement, they hold a nice sag in the upper run. Spray the hull and turret with a primer first (it will reveal any imperfect joints) and only then with the base color, which you can lighten slightly on the upper surfaces and darken in the shadows. After a coat of gloss varnish, apply the decals and a wash into the recesses. Build up the weathering from the bottom up: dust pigments on the running gear and hull underside, darker mud deposits on the tracks and fenders, and a metallic sheen (graphite) on the track pads and edges. Wear marks on the handles, hatches and foot areas will bring the model to life. Use thin liquid cement for small parts and, where possible, apply the paint with an airbrush.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
