The wooden wonder from de Havilland

The Mosquito was built mostly of wood, relied on speed instead of defensive armament, and the pair of Rolls-Royce Merlin engines made it one of the most versatile aircraft of the war. The T Mk.III trainer served to convert crews, the B Mk.IV was the first production bomber variant, the FB Mk.VI received machine guns and cannons in the nose and became the most numerous form of all, while the B Mk.XX came from Canadian production as a counterpart of the Mk.IV bomber.

What to watch out for

• Wooden construction means a smooth surface, so the engraving is fine and a decal covers it easily.
• Polish the surface with gloss varnish and let it dry out thoroughly.
• Transfer the large national insignia one at a time.
• Setting solution helps across the canopy and the engine nacelles.
• A final matte varnish will unify the shade of the whole area.
