An injection-molded plastic kit of an English medieval sailing ship in 1:72 scale from Zvezda. The model represents a cog with tall fighting castles fore and aft, a fortified fighting top on the mast and a single large square sail. The box offers an outer shell with relief planking, a choice of full-hull or waterline version, an injection-molded sail in either a furled or a billowing variant, a name plate and a stand. The binding list of parts is given in the instructions in the box.
The cog was the typical merchant and warship of northern Europe in the high Middle Ages, a sturdy single-masted sailing vessel with high sides. In combat service it was given wooden castles fore and aft, from which archers and soldiers fought in naval encounters that often turned into fighting man against man. A ship of this type represents the era when sea battles were still fought without guns, by closing in and boarding the enemy deck. It is a rewarding subject for lovers of historical sailing ships.
First choose the hull version, as the lower part and the waterline plate are mutually exclusive. Treat the wood of the hull and the castles with a darker base, a dry brush across the edges of the planks and a dark wash in the seams; that will bring out the relief of the planking. The injection-molded sail can be picked out with subtle toning toward beige and light shadows in the folds. Add the rigging and the stand according to the instructions, and glue the small parts carefully with liquid cement for plastic.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
