A turned brass pitot tube for a model of the Polikarpov I-16 fighter in 1:72 scale. A replacement for the plastic part, which tends to be coarse and snaps off easily.
Responsibility details are not available.
The metal pitot tube replaces the plastic part from the kit. At this scale plastic cannot be made thin enough, the part tends to be thickened, and every time the model is picked up there is a risk of snapping it off. Turned brass keeps a properly slender section, stands up to handling and, if it does get bent, can be straightened instead of breaking.
The Polikarpov I-16 was a Soviet fighter monoplane of the 1930s, recognizable by its short barrel-shaped fuselage, its air-cooled radial engine and a landing gear the pilot retracted by hand with a crank. At the time it appeared it was among the most modern fighters in the world, and it stayed in service into the first years of the German-Soviet war.
Fit the tube at the very end of the build so that it is not in the way during painting and handling. Pre-drill the hole in the wing with a bit slightly smaller than the diameter of the part and widen it gradually until the part seats without play. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue or with epoxy, which gives more time to align it. Check the position and the angle against the drawings in the kit instructions. Degrease the metal before painting and lay down a primer meant for metal, or the paint will not hold on smooth brass.
The accessory will be appreciated by the modeler who dislikes coarse plastic shapes on small protrusions. The package holds the metal part; the kit, paints, glue and tools are not included, unless stated otherwise.
