An injection molded plastic kit of the French AMX-56 Leclerc main battle tank in the T5 production form, in 1:72 scale from the German maker Revell. The smaller scale means a reasonable number of parts and the finished model takes up little room in a display case, so the kit is manageable even for modelers starting out with military vehicles.
The Leclerc is the main battle tank of the French army, which in the 1990s replaced the older AMX-30. The design puts the emphasis on high mobility and on an autoloader for the main armament, thanks to which a crew of three men is enough instead of the usual four. The main weapon is a 120 mm smoothbore gun. The tank was built from the start around a digital fire control and command system, which is apparent in the external equipment of the vehicle as well. The T5 designation refers to the fifth production batch, that is a later production standard that differs in details from the first vehicles built. Besides France, the type was also taken into service by the United Arab Emirates.
It is advisable to separate the parts from the sprues with nippers and to level the gate remnants with a file or a sanding sponge, so that they do not remain on visible faces. Gluing is best dealt with using thin cement for plastic, which is drawn into the joint by capillary action and does not run onto the surface. The running gear and the tracks are best finished and painted before the hull is closed up and the fenders go on - later there is no access to them. It pays to apply a primer before painting; on large faces an airbrush is best. Under the decals it helps to varnish the place with a gloss coat, so that no silvered edges appear, and to unify the surface at the end with a matte varnish. A finish is better built up step by step: a dark wash in the engraved lines, then dust and mud pigments on the running gear and the lower areas of the hull.
