The deck of the ship LPH-6 Thetis Bay on a square acrylic board 240 x 240 mm. Intended for helicopter models in 1:72.
Responsibility details are not available.
Thetis Bay started out in the Second World War as an escort carrier, and in the mid-1950s she went through a conversion that had no precedent until then. The catapults and arrestor wires disappeared and the deck turned into one large landing area for assault helicopters. From 1959 she carried the designation LPH-6 and became the forerunner of all later helicopter carriers. She lasted in service until 1964.
A square 240 millimeters to a side takes one machine with its main rotor spread in 1:72 scale, which is exactly what suits helicopter models. The markings of the landing circles are printed and true, which matters more here than on an aircraft deck: any inaccuracy in a circle shows at first glance and it is hard to draw by hand.
An experienced diorama builder will make such a surface himself, but he pays for it in hours with a compass, masking film and an airbrush. A modeler whose main interest is the machine itself skips this stage and gets a finished background straight away. And anyone who is just starting out has an extra advantage here: on a finished board there is nothing to spoil that would have to be resprayed.
Acrylic three millimeters thick is rigid enough not to sag under a model, and the edges are finished so that the board lies on a shelf without rocking. Anyone who wants to take the scene further can add a low railing along the free edge and one figure of a marshaller with signal paddles; a surface this size will not carry more without losing its clarity.
