The fifth part of the Xtradecal 1:72 series for British Phantoms brings further markings for models of the FG.1 and FGR.2 versions in British service.
Responsibility details are not available.
The series that Xtradecal devoted to Phantoms in British colors is among the longest the maker has produced. This sheet follows on from the earlier parts and widens the choice for builders who have several airframes on the bench at once and want the finished machines not to resemble one another.
In Britain the Phantom came into its own as an all-rounder. The FGR.2 served at first in the strike and reconnaissance role, but once the Jaguars arrived it switched to air defense and supplemented the aging Lightnings. The FG.1 passed from the Royal Navy to the Royal Air Force after the career of the aircraft carrier Ark Royal came to an end. The last British examples flew on into the early 1990s, so many modelers still saw them in the air. A typical feature of that late service was an inconspicuous gray camouflage with toned-down national insignia.
It pays to cut tight to the print. The less clear film is left around the design, the better the edge disappears under the final varnish. Lay large items onto a drop of water while they can still be moved, and only then blot the water away. Finally seal the whole model with a matte or satin varnish.
This is a set of waterslide decals; the kit has to be obtained separately.
