1:72 Messerschmitt Bf 109X (Experimental fighter) is a short-run kit of the experimental version of the Bf 109 with a radial engine.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the experimental version of the German Bf 109 fighter, in 1:72 scale. What is unusual is the power plant: instead of the usual liquid-cooled engine in a slim nose, the aircraft received an air-cooled radial engine, which widened the front of the fuselage markedly. That changed the silhouette of the machine so much that you will not mistake it for an ordinary Bf 109 at first glance.
Swapping the power plant for a radial engine was a route repeatedly tried on fighters of the Second World War as a way of avoiding dependence on a single engine type and of improving resistance to damage, because an air-cooled engine has no cooling system that could be shot through. The price was greater frontal drag. On the Bf 109 it remained at the experimental stage and this form never reached production.
With a short-run set, test every part dry and count on filling, especially where the engine cowling joins the fuselage. Finish the cockpit before you close up the fuselage. The radial engine comes into its own once ignition leads of fine wire are added behind the cylinders. The finishes of experimental machines tended to be simple, so the model is brought to life more by a light differentiation of the panels than by strong weathering.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
