A set of periscopes with protective covers for models of the American Sherman medium tank in 1:72 scale from Firma49. The periscopes let the crew observe from inside a closed vehicle, and the covers above them protected them from damage and from shell splinters. The real vehicle had several of them, at the driver and his assistant as well as on the turret, so this is an element that repeats on a model and is visible from above.
In 1:72 scale the periscopes belong among the parts a production kit handles only with difficulty: they are small, they have thin walls and the mold rounds them off or suggests them with nothing more than shallow relief. A separately made replacement has sharper edges and a clear gap between the cover and the body of the periscope, which changes the overall impression when the model is seen from above, the most common angle from which a tank model is looked at.
Work with tweezers and over a surface with a raised edge, as parts of this size are hard to find. Cut away excess material with a sharp blade a little way from the part and carefully sand the remainder. Sand the periscopes suggested on the kit down flat, so that the new part sits flush. Choose the glue to suit the material of the parts: where it is not polystyrene, super glue applied with the tip of a wire holds best. Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water and degrease them. The procedure for the particular parts is given in the manufacturer instructions.
The package contains only the parts of this set. The tank model, paints and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
