The Marder in the Ausf.M standard was a German tank destroyer built on the chassis of the Panzer 38(t) light tank and listed under the designation Sd.Kfz.138. Compared with earlier conversions it had the engine moved to the middle of the hull, which left a low open fighting compartment at the rear with a good field of view and easy access to the gun. The armament was an anti-tank gun of 75 mm caliber, able to threaten even well armored targets, while its own armor stayed thin and protected the crew only against splinters and infantry fire. The vehicle therefore made its mark from prepared firing positions and from ambush, not in a head-on clash.

The open fighting compartment is visible from above on the finished model, so it pays to give attention to the inner surfaces and to paint them before you close the assembly up with the side plates. Clean the excess material and the traces of manufacture off the parts first and try the joints dry. Apply the base shade in several light coats and only then work with dust and abrasion; on this type they collect mainly on the running gear, on the fenders and on the edges of the fighting compartment. Small items of kit stowed in the open compartment give the model both scale and depth.
