Omask 1:72 Spitfire Mk.VIII / IX / XVI — Landing Gear Bay Plugs (for Eduard) are foam plugs that seal the model's landing gear bays during spraying. This is not a kit, but a masking aid for Eduard's Spitfire kits in 1:72 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
Note: this is not an airplane kit. It is a modeling aid: a set of shaped plugs made of flexible foam that fit into the model's landing gear bays and seal them for the duration of painting. The set is shaped to the bays of specific kits — the Spitfire Mk.VIII, Mk.IX and Mk.XVI from Eduard in 1:72 scale.
The landing gear bay is a deep cavity that the modeler paints as one of the first parts of the model. Before spraying camouflage onto the wings and fuselage, though, it has to be covered — otherwise overspray ruins the finished interior. Masking a deep, irregular cavity with tape and wads of cotton wool is a chore and still does not seal it properly. The plug simply drops into the bay, the model is sprayed, and once it dries the plug is removed. The foam compresses in the opening, seats against the edges on its own, and holds without glue. Besides paint, it also protects the bay during sanding and from dust.
The plug follows the shape of a specific kit's bay, so the sets are not universal or interchangeable. This one is designed for the Spitfire Mk.VIII, Mk.IX and Mk.XVI from Eduard in 1:72 scale — these variants share the same landing gear bay design, which is why one set covers all three. It is not designed, however, for Spitfires in other scales or from other manufacturers; Omask issues separate plugs for those. Please check the scale and manufacturer of your kit before buying.
The Spitfire is a British Second World War fighter and one of the icons of its era. The Mk.IX was created as a fast answer to the German Fw 190, which had briefly outclassed Allied fighters — it received the new Merlin 61 engine with a two-stage supercharger, which gave it back the edge at altitude. The Mk.VIII was a more thoroughly reworked variant with the same engine philosophy, but its preparation took longer, so it entered service later. The Mk.XVI was essentially a Mk.IX with a Merlin engine built under license in the USA by Packard. The plug set, though, is not tied to the aircraft version — it is tied to specific Eduard kits.
This is not a model or model parts — it is a masking aid sold separately. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
