A replacement barrel for a model of the assault howitzer built on the chassis of an assault gun. Alongside the machined barrel the name lists a brake for the muzzle and a gun mantlet, both of resin, and gives the weapon as the 10.5 cm StuH 42, 28 calibers long. The short, thick barrel is the recognition feature of this vehicle.
The Sturmhaubitze 42 came about once it turned out that the anti-tank gun of the assault guns would be of little help to infantry against fortified targets. Into the same hull the designers therefore built a 10.5 cm howitzer derived from a field weapon, which fired far more effective high-explosive ammunition. The vehicles served in assault gun units alongside the ordinary machines until the end of the war and were usually issued a few at a time.
Metal is heavy compared with plastic, so glue it only once the mantlet has fully set, and watch that the weapon stays horizontal. The resin muzzle brake has small openings that thick paint fills in easily; it pays to spray it apart from the rest and fit it when finished. The inside of the brake then only needs darkening a little and the vehicle looks complete.
