About product

Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I Early, Beginning of the Saga, 1:72 (IBG models)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British fighter Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I in its early form, in 1:72 scale from IBG models. It is a new tool; besides the plastic parts the box also contains photo-etched parts and several 3D-printed items to raise the level of detail. The Beginning of the Saga edition captures the very beginnings of the famous aircraft — early machines with a two-blade propeller. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, to be glued and painted. The exact package contents and markings depend on the particular edition.

The real subject

The Supermarine Spitfire is among the most iconic aircraft of the Second World War and the Mk.I was its very first production version. Early machines were marked by a two-blade fixed-pitch propeller, were powered by early series of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and were armed with eight .303 machine guns. The Spitfire Mk.I entered Royal Air Force service in the late 1930s and laid the foundation for the whole later, much-developed Spitfire family. The elegant elliptical wing became its unmistakable hallmark.

Building and painting tips

Clean the parts up and glue them with liquid cement for plastic; the photo-etched and 3D-printed items add fine detail, so work with them unhurriedly and with a sharp tool. Spray the model with a primer before painting. The typical British camouflage with brown and green fields on the upper surfaces looks best from an airbrush, which allows soft transitions; consider preshading the panel lines. The markings and RAF roundels are carried by waterslide decals, which you even out with a coat of clear once dry.

Who the model is for

  • for collectors of British Second World War fighters and admirers of the Spitfire
  • for modelers who want the very beginning of the whole saga in their collection — the early Mk.I with the two-blade propeller
  • for more advanced modelers who will appreciate the photo-etched and 3D-printed items in 1:72 scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
