A matte orange from the Vallejo Mecha Color range, carrying the number 69.007. On a model, orange is above all a warning color: it draws hazard stripes, marks places personnel are not to touch, and appears on life vests, on the tips of antennas and on the warning features of machines. In the hands of builders of science fiction hardware it serves as a strong counterpoint to gray and olive surfaces.
A matte finish gives no reflections, so the shape of a part stays legible even in a photograph. At the same time it takes highlighting glazes and other weathering methods well. Under decals, though, a matte surface is unsuitable: coat it with a gloss varnish first, otherwise air stays trapped under the film and the edges of the markings go gray. Once the decals are on and dry, the gloss is coated over with matte again.
Shake the bottle thoroughly before use, or the settled pigment stays at the bottom and the shade comes out weak. Apply several thin coats rather than one heavy one: warm shades have less covering power over a dark base, so it pays to lay a light undercoat beneath them. Choose the thinner and the thinning ratio according to the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging, and the same for cleaning brushes and the airbrush. Let the paint dry properly between coats, otherwise it lifts when overcoated.
It suits builders of science fiction hardware, robots and ordinary scale models who need a strong warning orange with a matte finish.
Thinner, brushes and an airbrush are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
