The set contains a 3D printed resin replica of the ODAB-500P aerial bomb in 1:32 scale. This is an accessory for the underwing armament, not a model of an aircraft. The print holds the smooth cylindrical shape of the body as well as the thin tail surfaces and the retarding elements, which an injection mold thickens.

The real subject

The ODAB-500P is a Soviet aerial bomb with a volumetric detonating, that is a thermobaric, charge, of the 500 kilogram weight class. Unlike a high-explosive fragmentation bomb it first disperses a flammable mixture and only then ignites it, so it acts above all through the blast wave in an enclosed space. It was carried by the tactical bombers and ground-attack aircraft of the Soviet and later the Russian Air Force. The letter P in the designation refers to the form with a retarding parachute.

Building and painting tips

First wash the 3D printed parts in warm water with a little dish soap, so that they are rid of the residue of printing resin. Cut the supports off with a sharp blade or a fine saw as close to the part as possible and sand the marks down with your airways protected. Resin does not bond with cement for polystyrene, so use cyanoacrylate glue. Lay a thin coat of primer on before painting, otherwise the paint holds poorly on a smooth print. Assemble and paint the weapons separately and glue them onto the pylon only once the varnish has dried, so that the fine surfaces are not rubbed.
