Large dark fragments 2 to 5 mm. They serve as sintered pieces of lava, lumps of coal by a boiler house or the charred remains of a collapsed building.

A grain two to five millimeters across is a prop in its own right on a diorama. The viewer looks at it as an individual piece, not as a surface, and placement therefore matters more than quantity. The dark tone casts such a piece in the role played by sintered lava thrown out of a crater, a lump of fuel fallen from a cart or a charred stone from demolition.
First, around a fire: larger pieces can be arranged around a dead fire pit so that they form an irregular ring, and the scene gains a center at once. The second situation is an industrial surface where fuel lies scattered around a dump. And third, a volcanic hillside, where large pieces lie at random in a finer deposit because they flew farther than the ash.
The material shares its shade with the finer grades of the same color, so pouring two or three sizes side by side suggests a continuous surface with no visible seams. That is the quickest way to turn a flat board into a piece of derelict landscape. Lay the arrangement out loose before gluing, and reach for the glue only once the layout sits right, because a dried piece can be removed only together with a piece of the base.
