Dual Exo is an acrylic range from AK interactive with a satin finish, thinnable with water, meant mainly for figures, sci-fi and fantasy models. You will recognize the principle it is built on straight from the names of the individual bottles: every number in the range exists in an A and a B variant, that is, as a pair of shades that belong together. This collected package offers the range as a whole - according to the name it is 43 items.

Why the paints are kept in pairs

The A and B pairs are not two random shades, but two points on the same color path. When you mix the intermediate steps from them, you get a smooth transition that stays clean in color. That is the practical consequence of one of the most useful rules of color theory: a lighter tone should not be made with white. White does not only raise the lightness, it lowers the saturation at the same time, so a fresh red turns into pink and a green into a faded pastel. Adding a lighter related shade, or a small amount of yellow with warm colors, lightens the area and keeps the color alive at the same time.

Mixing a supply and repeatability

• Mix more than you need - topping up the same tone later practically never hits it exactly
• Write the ratios down by the drop, not by eye; otherwise you will not restore the shade when you finish the model
• Keep the surplus in a closed bottle with a mixing ball and shake it well before the next use
• Shift the color toward warm by adding a drop of yellow or orange, toward cool with a drop of blue - always in a really small amount
• On large models the base tone will take a higher saturation than on a small figure; in small scales the area darkens and grays optically
