A base coat comes in as the first layer on an assembled and cleaned model. It unifies a surface made up of differently colored parts, improves the adhesion of the coats that follow, and reveals fine sanding marks, scratches and seams that have not been finished. It pays to look the model over once the base coat has dried and to put the flaws right before the paint comes.
A red base is warm and saturated, so red and orange shades gain depth over it and do not have to be built up as many times as over a light or neutral surface. Modelers reach for it on vehicles where a rusty or oxidized surface is built under the top coat and the base is to show through on worn places, and also on vehicles and machines whose colors rest on warm tones.
First wash the surface, degrease it and let it dry thoroughly. Apply the base coat in thin layers, rather two or three than one heavy one, so that fine detail and raised relief are not flooded. Let the coat dry out properly before further painting. The way of application, any thinning and the suitability for a particular material are stated by the manufacturer on the packaging; follow those instructions.
A separate 60 ml package of base coat is offered. The model, paints and tools are not included, unless stated otherwise.
