This is a thinner with a drying retarder added, as the name of the item also states. Besides the usual adjustment of the consistency of paint it therefore extends the time the paint stays workable on the palette and on the model. That is the difference from an ordinary thinner, which adjusts the consistency but has no such effect on the speed of drying.
It comes into its own most where work is done wet into wet: on smooth transitions between shades on figures, when lightening areas gradually and on larger uniform areas, where the edge of a stroke would otherwise have time to set. It also serves well in a warm, dry workshop or in summer, when the paint dries before you manage to spread it.
Mix on a palette or in a separate container, not directly in the bottle of paint. Add it drop by drop and watch the ratio the manufacturer states on the packaging: a larger dose of retarder extends the drying more than you expect, and the coat may stay soft and prone to fingerprints for a long time. So let a finished coat dry out properly before you work on it further or varnish over it. Keep the container well closed.
