One shade from the IONIC DRYBRUSH range, that is from the paints intended for work with a dry brush. The designation Red names a basic red with no shift toward orange or purple. It is applied over a finished base and its task is not to cover the surface but to bring the edges and highest places out of it.
Red is one of the most used supporting tones. With a dry brush you can use it to pick out the folds of cloaks and banners, red uniforms, insignia and heraldry on shields, fire extinguishers and warning features on vehicles, or the painted surfaces of cars. It also serves well as an underlay beneath rust, where a gentle pass along the edges breaks up a uniform brown surface. On a dark base it shows more strongly than on a light one.
Pick up a small amount of paint, wipe it off on a paper towel and try a stroke on scrap. As long as the brush draws a continuous line there is still too much paint; a correctly set brush leaves only a fine dusting on the edges. Apply in several light passes rather than one heavy one, as it can always be strengthened and almost never reduced. Thinning does not help with this technique, as the paint then runs into the hollows instead of staying on the edges. Wash the brush immediately after work, as dried paint at the ferrule will spoil the hair.
