MASKING TAPE 2 (6 mm x 25 m) — AMMO of Mig Jimenez

MASKING TAPE 2 from AMMO of Mig Jimenez is a masking tape for modelers 6 mm wide with a 25 m roll. It serves to cover areas that are not to receive paint during spraying and to separate fields of color with a sharp edge. It is a modeling aid, not a kit — nothing is built from it, it is a consumable for the workbench.

Why modeling tape and not ordinary paper tape

Office or painter's tape holds too strongly and when it is lifted it likes to pull paint and primer off with it, especially on a fresh coat. Modeling tape therefore has a low, controlled tack — it adheres enough to keep paint from getting under it, but comes off without damaging the surface. The second difference is a cleanly cut edge: a straight, unbroken edge with no fraying is what keeps a line sharp and stops paint creeping under. The third difference is an adhesive that leaves no sticky residue when it is lifted, residue that would then have to be removed laboriously from a finished clear coat.

Use

• The 6 mm width is the narrowest of those commonly used — it suits places where a wide tape is in the way.
• The frames of cockpit glazing and windows: a narrow strip follows the pillars and frames exactly.
• Thin dividing lines between colors, stripes, trim and fine camouflage boundaries.
• Arcs and curves — a narrow tape can be bent into a turn, while a wide one breaks and wrinkles in a curve.
• Holding a part temporarily until the glue dries, or as a guide when scribing panel lines.
• If needed, it can be narrowed further by cutting it lengthwise with a sharp knife on a mat.

Who it is for

For everyone who sprays with an airbrush or a spray can and wants sharp transitions with no bleeding — from builders of aircraft and vehicles through figures to RC models. The six-millimeter width is the typical choice for detail; on large areas it is more practical to combine it with a wider tape or with masking film.

Before the tape is applied the surface must be dry, degreased and the paint sufficiently dried through. Lift the tape slowly, at an acute angle and preferably away from fresh paint. On an unknown or very delicate finish, test the adhesion on a hidden place first. Store it dry and out of the reach of children.
