About product

Mr. Finishing Cloth — a fine Gunze polishing cloth

Mr. Finishing Cloth from Gunze is a polishing and wiping cloth of very fine short fibers. It is not a kit or a paint — it is an aid for the final stage of a build. The manufacturer places it alongside work with polishing compound: the cloth is intended for polishing a finish to a shine, for wiping smears and dirt off the surface and for drying a model after washing. Its main advantage is that it leaves no lint or fibers on the surface, which on a freshly polished finish is the last thing you would want there.

What polishing is actually for

Once a finish has dried, a fine orange peel, embedded specks of dust or matte patches almost always appear on the surface. Polishing smooths the surface to a deep shine — and on glossy models (cars, formula racers, motorcycles, aircraft in natural metal) it is the last, decisive step. Without it a finish never looks wet and the model gives away that it is a model.

Use

  • Polish only once the finish has fully cured, not once it is dry — that is the crucial difference. A finish is dry to the touch in a few hours but cures for days. Into an uncured finish the cloth will only smear and you will give yourself scratches.
  • Apply a very small amount of fine polishing compound and polish with light strokes and minimal pressure, checking against the light as you go.
  • Take care on edges and rivets — the finish is thinnest there and you will rub through to the paint fastest.
  • With a dry cloth wipe off the remains of the compound and polish the surface to its final shine; it also suits wiping dust off before spraying.
  • Polishing does not belong on matte and semi-matte finishes — a matte surface would gain a sheen and you would destroy the effect.

Who it is for

For builders of glossy models — cars, formula racers, motorcycles and aircraft in natural metal — and for everyone who wants a finish that looks like a paint shop rather than a spray can. Anyone who builds matte military equipment will use it rather for wiping off dust and dirt.

Keep the cloth clean — a trapped grain of abrasive or dust turns it into a scraper. The material is fine, but the polishing itself is done by the compound; without it this is only wiping and buffing. The exact dimensions, the number of pieces in the package and any declared washability are not stated here.

FAQ

The manufacturer describes it as a cloth of very fine short fibers intended for work with polishing compound and for wiping the surface — that is, as a polishing and wiping cloth, not an abrasive one. The actual smoothing of the surface is done by the compound; the cloth carries it and finishes the shine.

Only once it has fully cured, not once it is dry. A finish tends to be dry to the touch in hours but cures for days. Anyone who polishes too early only smears the finish and makes grooves that can be put right only by respraying.

For a real polish to a deep shine yes — the cloth is intended for work with fine polishing compound. On its own it serves to wipe off the remains of compound, dust and smears and to dry a model after washing.

We do not recommend it. Polishing would give a matte and semi-matte surface a sheen and the matte effect would be lost. Polishing belongs exclusively on glossy finishes.
