Mr. Surfacer 500 is a liquid filling primer (surfacer) from the Japanese brand GSI Creos / Mr. Hobby, supplied in a bottle with a volume of 40 ml. It is a gray material that combines the function of a filler and a base coat: it fills small unevenness, grooves and scratches and at the same time creates a uniform matte base for paint. The number 500 marks the coarseness of the grit — it is coarser than the popular 1000 or 1200 versions, so it suits more pronounced defects and deeper grooves that finer surfacers cannot fill.

Use

• Apply with a brush straight onto the problem places — seams after the parts have been glued, scratches or deeper grooves.
• Once dry, sand it smooth with wet abrasive paper; the coarser 500 grit makes it possible to level more pronounced unevenness too.
• It can also be applied with an airbrush once thinned with a suitable thinner, to create textured surfaces (for example an imitation of rolled sheet metal).
• For a final fine base it is worth finishing the place with a finer surfacer (1000 or 1200) before painting.
• Let it dry properly; apply it carefully on thin and delicate parts, because the material can attack styrene.
