Gunze MT-504, very fine 1500 grit

One of the finest steps in the waterproof Gunze sanding range. A 1500 grit is no longer used to alter the shape but purely to refine the surface just before the final coat or before polishing. The scratches it leaves are so small that the following coat fills them reliably.

What the 1500 grit is used for

• preparing the clear coat before polishing to a mirror gloss
• removing small specks of dirt caught in a fresh coat
• refining a flat coat that dried with a grainy texture
• knocking the gloss back on a small area without using flat clear

What to watch out for

The finer the paper, the greater the temptation to press. That is exactly the mistake, because a fine grit works only in a thin surface layer and under pressure the paint tears through to the base. Sand under water, rinse the paper often and keep checking the surface in raking light. On curved areas back the paper with a piece of soft rubber; on edges you barely need to sand at all. If a drop of water stops sliding on the surface and starts to break up, that is the signal that the paper is clogged and it is time to rinse it or change it.

For modelers who take the paint to a high gloss, whether on cars, motorcycles or painted accessories. It also helps when repairing a small flaw in an otherwise finished coat, where a coarser paper would do more harm than good.
