Five palms with a shapeable trunk and hand-painted bark texture, meant for tropical, desert and seaside scenes.
Responsibility details are not available.
On a diorama a palm is a shorthand the viewer reads at once: it means the tropics, a desert or a coast. That is exactly why it turns up in scenes from Pacific islands through North Africa to seaside resorts and model layouts with a southern atmosphere.
The trunks are flexible and carry a relief with raised rings left by fallen leaves. By bending them you can achieve the characteristic curve that palms growing in a windy position by water have, and every piece in the package can be given a different lean.
The surface is painted by hand, so the brown bark has a varying tone and the leaves are not a uniform green. The item therefore does not have to be painted further; at most a dry lower leaf or a few fruits can be added if the modeler wants to make the scene his own.
A palm is seated into a hole in the base; the area around it is then masked with sand, rubble or low growth. In a group it looks better than on its own, which is why there are five of them in the package and they can be set in irregular clumps.
Palm leaves are thin and bend easily when a scene is carried. It is sensible to seat them at the end of the work, once the terrain is finished and the turf applied, so that they do not have to be handled more than is necessary. If a leaf does deform, it usually returns to shape after a short warming with hot air and being held until it cools.
With hand-painted pieces it is therefore right to expect a slight variation from one piece to another.
