The Humvee, that is the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, became the workhorse of the US Army from the 1980s. Deployment in built-up areas showed, however, that a light open structure does not protect the crew against gunfire and improvised devices, and so armored versions came about. The M1114 designation is carried by the version with an armored cab, thick glass and a strengthened chassis able to bear the added weight. On the roof sits the M153 CROWS II weapon station. It is controlled remotely from inside the vehicle, the gunner watches the surroundings through a day and night camera and does not have to lean out into an open ring. It is exactly this pair, an armored vehicle with a camera head above the roof, that is the typical image of American units in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The subject is the M1114 with the M153 station on the roof, that is the form from modern deployments. The 1:72 scale is rewarding in that you can build a whole patrol in a small area: the vehicle looks good on its own, in a column and in a diorama with figures and terrain.
The parts are not polystyrene, so the joints are held by super glue. Cut excess material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the remainder carefully. Before painting, wash and degrease everything, or the paint will not hold. Modern American vehicles wear either a desert sand shade or a greenish gray; dust on the underside of the vehicle and light scuffs on the edges will do more for credibility than elaborate shading.
