About product

Mirage Hobby Sanding Sponges 1200 Grit (6 pcs)

A set of six flexible foam sanding sponges from the Polish maker Mirage Hobby with a grit of 1200. This is a modeling tool, not a kit. The abrasive grit is carried on pliable foam, so the sponge follows rounded shapes and smooths the curves of a fuselage, a cowling or a helmet evenly, with no flats and no sanded-through edges. It can be used dry or wet; after work it is rinsed with water and serves again.

1200 Grit - Fine

Twelve hundred is a fine grit that practically no longer removes any surface - it only smooths it. With abrasives the rule is that the lower the number, the coarser the grit: four hundred removes material fast, fifteen hundred only smooths. Always work therefore from a coarser grit to a finer one and do not skip steps - a fine sponge will never smooth out the grooves left by a coarse one, it will only polish them. A grit of 1200 comes after the medium thousand and is essential where paint is involved: it can level out small imperfections in a spray coat without wearing it through to the plastic.

Use

  • Fine smoothing of the surface of plastic and putty after sanding with a medium grit, before paint is sprayed.
  • Intermediate sanding of paint - smoothing away specks of dust, slight orange peel or unevenness between the individual spray coats.
  • Softening the transitions where plastic meets a filled seam.
  • Wet: dampen the part and the sponge - wet sanding of paint is gentler, the dust binds into the water and the surface is harder to wear through.
  • Work with light pressure; fine grit works by itself, and pressing will only wear the paint through.
  • If you want to take the surface further still, move on to 1500 grit before the final varnish or polishing.

Who the sponges are for

For plastic modelers who build aircraft, vehicles, ships and figures and need to sand shapes that flat sandpaper cannot reach. The flexible foam backing follows the curve of a fuselage, a wing, a turret or a helmet and leaves neither flats nor sanded-through edges. A sponge can be cut up to reach into narrow places as well. A grit of 1200 will be appreciated above all by modelers who paint in several coats - on cars, motorcycles and everywhere the surface is meant to be smooth and glossy.

The package contains 6 pieces. After work, rinse the sponge with clean water, squeeze it out and let it dry freely - it will regain its springiness and can be used again.

FAQ

It is a fine grit - the higher the number, the finer the grit. Twelve hundred practically no longer removes material, it only smooths. It is finer than 1000 and coarser than 1500.

Between spray coats you smooth away specks of dust that have settled and small unevenness, so that the next coat of paint sits on a smooth base. Work with light pressure, ideally wet, so that the paint is not worn through.

No. A fine grit will not smooth out the grooves left by a coarse abrasive, it will only polish them. Work from a coarser grit to a finer one: 400 for rough work, 1000 for smoothing, 1200 for fine smoothing.

There are six pieces in the package. The sponges are meant for dry and wet sanding, and once rinsed with water and dried they can be used again.
