A palette of eighteen shades put together for painting anime figures by a Japanese artist: clean skin, rich purples and blues and subdued earthy tones for contrast.

Painting an anime figure follows different rules from a historical bust. The skin should be smooth and free of dirt, the transitions soft, the colors of the clothing rich and clean, and the shadow must not turn gray, because that would age the figure at once. Anyone putting such a palette together from ordinary modeling shades usually ends up with tones that are too muddy for this style.
The signature set gets around that work. The eighteen bottles hold white, black and a neutral gray for controlling brightness, a light flesh color, a rich magenta, a deep violet and two blues for hair and fabrics, a yellow with a Sahara and a sand tone, a green and finally a burnt red, browns and rust for the places where the contrast needs to be brought down.
The basis is the flesh tone and the white, while the other shades are used more as additives than as finished colors. Hair is painted from a dark base up to a bright strand, clothing on the other hand from a mid tone in both directions. The transitions are not made with a dry brush but with a series of heavily thinned coats that must not be rushed; an airbrush is an advantage, but it can be done with a brush too.
In this style the transition between tones should look smooth, but the boundary between the lit and the shaded side stays readable. That is exactly where the anime approach parts company with a realistic bust.
