XGM 03 Royal Metallic Red

The marker

A marker pen of the Gundam Marker line filled with a red paint with a metallic sheen, manufacturer code XGM03, the shade carried under the name Royal Metallic Red. The paint goes from the tip straight onto the model, with no palette, no thinning and no airbrush.

Where a metallic red is useful

A metallic red is used as a striking accent. On robots you will find it on shields, chest covers and the edges of armor, on vehicles on small covers and accessories, and on figures on their gear. What sets it apart from an ordinary flat red is that the sheen changes the depth of the color with the viewing angle, so even a small area catches the eye on a model.

How to work with the marker

Shake the marker before work, as the metallic pigment settles at the bottom. Prime the tip by pressing it on a plastic offcut and only then move onto the model. Apply a thin coat in one direction, let it dry and add a second one if needed; going over paint that has not dried drives the pigment around and the shade then looks blotchy.

• a smooth, even base matters more for a metallic shade than it does for flat paints
• the depth of the color changes with the viewing angle, so judge the result in a different light as well
• wipe the tip after work and close the marker carefully, otherwise it dries out
• the solvent in the marker can act on the paint underneath, so try it on a scrap part first

Terms of supply

The package holds the marker in the stated finish. The model, further shades, varnishes and tools are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise. Work in a well-ventilated room and store the marker out of the reach of children.
