The F4F Wildcat was a carrier fighter of the US Navy with its characteristic landing gear retracting into the fuselage. The F4F-3 version was powered by the air-cooled two-row Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp radial. With its short ring cowling the engine is very clearly visible from the front on this type, so replacing the plastic part with a finer casting markedly changes the look of the finished model, especially if you open the cowling up.
Wash the parts first in lukewarm water with a detergent and let them dry. Cut the supports and the casting blocks off with a fine saw, level the surfaces with a file and protect your airways while sanding. It is glued with super glue. A radial engine looks best if you spray it a dark metallic shade, then the cylinders a lighter one, and pull the whole together with a dark wash, which brings out the fins on the heads. Paint in the wiring and the exhaust stubs with a brush at the very end; a light touch of dry brush on the edges gives a three-dimensional look.
The set is an accessory for a kit, not a model in its own right. The base kit, the paints and the glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
