A filbert is a brush with a flat ferrule and a rounded end cut in an arc. It thus combines the properties of a flat and a round brush: laid flat it covers a wider band like a flat brush, but it leaves no sharp edge to the stroke, because the sides of the mark are rounded. Stood on its edge it will manage a thinner line as well. That is exactly why it is popular wherever a soft transition matters rather than a precise border.
The designation 4 gives the size within the range, so this is a medium size suited to larger areas of a model as well as to figures. It comes into its own for blending paint into a smooth transition, for work with oil paints and for dry brushing, where the rounded end passes easily over edges and raised surface detail. For fine details and markings reach for a smaller round brush; the filbert is too wide for them.
Clean the brush right after work, before the paint dries, and use the product intended for that paint according to its manufacturer's instructions. Never let paint dry in the ferrule, because it splays the hair and the shape of the end is then gone for good. After cleaning, straighten the hair back into its original shape and let the brush dry lying flat or hair down. Never leave it standing hair down in a container of thinner. Do not use the brush to stir paint or to scrape off dried residue.
