Fine Grinding File is a U-STAR fine sanding stick — the tool for the second step of sanding, when the shape is refined after the coarse removal and the valleys, edges and transitions between parts are cleaned up.
Responsibility details are not available.
A sanding stick from the U-STAR tool range in a fine grade, as the word fine in the name indicates. It comes in at the moment the coarse work is done: the shape is right, the ridge of the parting line is gone and the marks left by the coarse abrasive have to be removed.
A fine grade comes into its own most where two surfaces meet. The valley between a keel and a hull, the transition of a wing into a fuselage, the corner between a side and a superstructure or the edge of a hatch — in all those places a coarse abrasive is too wild and will easily sand away an edge that should stay legible. A fine sanding stick takes material off more slowly, so you keep the work under control and can tell when it is time to stop. It serves equally well for rounding off the overly sharp edges of cast parts, which look unnaturally thick in scale.
Work with strokes from the edge into the surface rather than out across the edge — otherwise you will round it off before you know it. When sanding along an engraved line, run the strokes parallel to it, so that it does not get clogged with sanding dust. Keep checking the surface against a side light; fine scratches are practically invisible looking from above, but they stand out under gloss paint. After this step, all that remains is polishing with a sponge or paper of a high grit, and the surface is ready for the base color.
