About product

Amazing Art - flat sanding file 100/180

A flat modeling sanding file from Amazing Art with two working sides of different grit: 100 and 180. The number gives the coarseness of the abrasive, and the rule is that the lower the number, the coarser the grain and the faster the stock removal. The 100 side is therefore coarse and serves for fast leveling, while the 180 side is finer and smooths the surface. The practical advantage is obvious: you do not have to swap between two separate files, you only turn the tool over in your hand.

Use

  • Sprue stubs left after a part is cut from the sprue are leveled with the coarser 100 side.
  • Parting seams on fuselages, cowlings, turrets or engine cylinders should be sanded evenly along their whole length, so that the surface does not ripple.
  • Filled joints are leveled flush with the surrounding surface once the putty has dried completely.
  • Smoothing is done with the 180 side, whose finer grain removes the scratches left by coarse sanding and prepares the surface for the base coat.

How to go about it correctly

Sanding always runs from the coarser grit to the finer. A fine abrasive will not smooth the scratches left by a coarse grain away; those have to be sanded out, not merely painted over. If you start with the 100 side, therefore, finish the work with the 180 side, or the scratches will stay visible under the paint. Plastic also sands well wet: dampen the file and the part with water, the abrasive clogs less, the surface comes out smoother and, above all, no dust flies about. On delicate parts press lightly and rather repeat more light strokes.

Who the file is for

For every builder of plastic models, figures and accessories, from the beginner to the experienced modeler. Sanding seams and sprue stubs is work that comes back with every kit, and the double grit makes this file a versatile tool for any workshop.

Do not breathe the sanding dust: work in a ventilated room, sand wet if you can or use a respirator. Store out of the reach of children.

FAQ

They are the grit of the abrasive. A lower number means a coarser grain and faster stock removal, a higher number a finer grain and a smoother surface. The 100 side is therefore coarse, the 180 side finer.

Always with the coarser 100 side, and only then move to 180. A fine grit will no longer smooth the scratches left by coarse sanding, which is why you never go the other way round.

Yes, wet sanding is the recommended method on plastic. Dampen the file and the part with water: the abrasive clogs less, the surface is smoother and no sanding dust flies about.

For ordinary sanding of seams, sprue stubs and putty, yes. For very fine polishing of the surface before a gloss clear coat, a still finer abrasive with a higher grit number is useful.
