Late fall has a palette of its own: rusty, coppery, ocher and brown, with green only in remnants. The shape of a crown changes at the same time, because thinned leaves uncover the branches and a tree loses its compact silhouette. Anyone modeling this part of the year is building a skeleton that shows through rather than a dense ball, and for that they need a material that can be applied thinly.
The most common mistake with a fall scene is excessive density. A November tree has barely half of what it carried in July in its crown, so taking away pays off: loosen a tuft more than feels comfortable and leave gaps between the clumps. The material left over then finds a use down on the ground, where a colored carpet of fallen leaves lies under the tree.
It can be tuned to the vegetation under the trees as well. Grass in late fall fades to a straw color, so a richly green lawn under a rusty crown is jarring and gives away that a scene was put together from whatever was at hand. It is enough to go over the lawn with a thin glaze toward yellow and the whole view is unified into a single season, without anything having to be glued over. Toning down the color of the fields and field boundaries helps in the same way, because in November the landscape is darker and less colorful overall than it is remembered from summer photographs.
