A grass mat is a continuous strip of artificial grass on a flexible backing. Compared with scattered static grass it has one great advantage: you cover a large area quickly and evenly, without an applicator, without glue over the whole area and without clearing up loose fibers afterwards. The light green shade matches a fresh spring and summer meadow, mown areas and tended greenery around buildings.

Use

• First lay the mat out and cut it dry, and only then glue it; once the glue is down there is no correcting it.
• Glue it with PVA applied evenly onto the surface underneath, not onto the mat.
• Hide the edges and seams with tufts of grass, bushes or scatter, otherwise the edges are clearly visible.
• Level the terrain under the mat; every bump and crumb will show through the flexible backing.
• Break the uniformity up: added scatter, a darker wash in the hollows and a dry brush over the tips will dispel the impression of a carpet.

When to reach for a mat and when for static grass

A mat is a tool for an area, static grass a tool for detail and texture. The best results come from combining them: the mat lays the base and sets the color of the growth, and static grass and tufts then finish the places where grass would grow differently, by walls, fences, in ditches and around stones. A mat on its own, without fine-tuning, always looks a little like a product rather than a meadow.
